This is a transcript of an online chat Bruce did prior to the con on Aug. 2, 2005. aaaevents: Hello everyone, Louise here. Just to let you know that Bruce is in the house! He is just getting a cup of tea and settling himself him in. So give him a few minutes to sort himself and wait for him to say hello and ask your questions. Hi Bruce, thanks for joining us all tonight. Over to you my friend...... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bruce: Howdy y'all, Sorry thought I was from Texas for second, its me here in sunny Auckland New Zealand. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spooky1980 wrote: Hi Bruce, My questions are: 1) What's the weirdest/funniest rumor or thing you have ever read or heard about yourself? 2) If you could be involved in a movie adaptation from any book, what would it be and why that book? 3) If you could work with anyone in the world who would you most like to work with and why? 4) Who has most influenced you in your life? Thanks for taking the time to speak to us all. Take care, Hazel Bruce: I haven't actually heard any strange rumours about myself, why !!! HAVE YOU!!! who said what?, give me names and address' and I'll send da boys around! I've just started reading 'The Lovely Bones' which is the book Peter, Fran and Phyllipa have taken the rights on. It is heavy as hades (the story, not the book) and would be a brilliant challenge as an actor. John Travolta, he's just one cool dude, actually Jack Nicholson also as I love his work, oh and Viggo as he is such a wonderful person to be around, and ....and ..... and..... the list goes on and on... My father and mother came to Auckland last Friday to attend the launch of my new film company DVD "1nite", and my Dad collapsed and is still in intensive care. It is only now really as I visit him and see him fighting for his own life that I realise how powerful a part of him I am and of me he is. So my Mum and dad! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Woody wrote: Hi Bruce I have had two memorable meetings with you. Last time I saw you in London and I gave you some LOTR socks ! Have you worn them yet ? !! Emily x Bruce: Boy you should smell 'em!!! truely I have been wearing them, I loved them. I tend not to wear LOTR gear as it is a little bit like you are advertising that you were in the films (NZ is a small place!) so with the socks it was like I got to wear something but just no one else knew!!! Sorry if I have been showing the fact that I am a forum " freshy" I am starting to get the hang of it. I've only done this once before, so be gentle......... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Laiquendi wrote: Hi Bruce! :) Greetings from Ireland! Thanks for joining us all. I'd just like to know if there were any other scenes filmed involving your character Gamling, that didn't make it into the final cut due to time? And if there were, would you care to share them with us? Take Care, Michelle Bruce: Hi Michelle, there are not really any scenes that I did that are not in the film, there are just sections of scenes that got tightened up and so I lost some screen time through that. But by virtue of the way Gamling evolved (ie. they only created him halfway through principal shooting and then kept adding him into scenes they had already written) I got to survive most of the editing process. Hanging beside that delightful Theoden helps of course, they could not really cut him out. Quite often I am just there at his side (Gamling was actually only meant to be there to make Theoden coffee and get him his take away orc burgers, and fried slices of elven thigh,... a very tasty nibble!!!) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Glaewen wrote: Hi Bruce - how are you? How is it with the stunt-riding? Some injurings? I hope you enjoy it really - I love to ride a horse, too. What are you doing in the moment? Theatre or movie making? I am glad to meet you on the FF again. love and a kiss Glaewen :) Bruce: oi oi Glaewen, At the moment I am working with a guy called Amarbir Singh, a very talented young movie maker here in NZ. I acted in an 80 minute digital feature called "1nite" that he made in late 2003. All he had was a miniDV camera (no lights or sound gear, as he had no money either !!) and he made a wonderful movie about 4 journeys that happen on 1 night around a road called Karangahape Rd in central Auckland. "1nite" in fact won an award at the NZ film and TV awards last week!!! So we have formed a company called IndiPact Films. You can see our web site at http://www.indiPact.com (push refresh if it does not come up straight away, the site is still being built) . We are working on our next feature called "P120" I will bring a DVD of a 2 minute teaser we shot to romote that film to investors. We also launched the DVD of "1nite" last Friday. I will get informatuion out soon as to how you can buy "1nite" online. I took part in a small studio showing of a one act Sam Shepard play a couple of weeks ago, that was cool. It was a crazy piece full of acid ravings!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Naaaaaaazguuuuuul wrote: Hi Bruce, this is July and Naz! Where else can we find you on film or tv? We understand you were part of a comedy duo - can you tell us what that was and we'll search it out!!! Look forward to seeing you Bank Hol Monday and getting Bruce-napped once more. Love. xxx Bruce: Yo Nazzy, I pretty much answered the part about TV and film in a previous question, and as I said my focus is the company I have formed. We are pitching an idea for a 7 part TV series here in NZ to the Maori TV network also. I have another doco that someone is pitching on my behalf to the TV stations here and Amarbir (my business and film partner) and I are close to launching our finance package for our next film "P120". I just realised Nazzy I did not answer the previous question properly, so can I add that no I did not have any real accidents on horseback (despite being an absolute novice rider!!!) but I saw both Kiran and Orlando have the most amazing wipe outs, they still make me cringe when I think about them (I'm cringing right Now!!! oooouuucccchhhhhh) My comedy duo is something I have done for 18 years with my oldest and closest friend Alan Reid. He does not do any other performing. We call ourselves Des and Les (we used to call ourselves The Golden Holdens) . At the moment we have not done any shows for a while (we tend to MC conferences etc) but we do a weekly talk back radio show which we love doing. You can stream it online at http://www.radiolive.co.nz Our show is on at midnight Saturday till 6am Sunday mornings[NZ timezone]. It is heaps of fun we get people calling up playing their pianos, singing songs etc etc, plus we rave away about different topics. Have a listen. You will need to work out the time difference. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ jmsstyxnyes wrote: Hiya Bruce, your web master here. ;) Hope you have a great time at Fellowship, can't wait to get together at Dragon. :) Question, how are things with Operation Read? Seems we haven't had an update on that for a while. Cheers mate, Janet P.S. Big storms are acoming here, may not be able to stay long, will have to read the transcript later. ;) If the Fellowship will allow, I will put the transcript at your site on the Fellowship Fest page I'll be creating for this con. Bruce: Hey Janet, Good luck with those twisters and hurricanes, what a crazy part of the world. It was happening like that when I was at DragonCon last year, I just got out in time from the airport before a strom hit. Operation Read is in stall mode. The LA side of things had not moved. Winnie was talking to Disney about their involvement, as the kids are reading 'Lion Witch and Wardrobe' this year for the programme. Apparently Disney were all fired up and no are all fired down!!! So to make it progress I will need to source funding from the US as the funding bodies here in NZ only want shows that are about NZ based events!!! See you in Atlanta ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ _Eowyn_ wrote: Hi Bruce, how are you? My question is, looking back over your time in Middle Earth, what was the most memorable thing for you? From a huge fan, Caitlin Bruce: Gidday Huge Fan, When you say huge fan does that mean you as a fan are huge, or your fanness is huge??? Sorry I hope my version of trying to be humurous gets understood...sometimes I don't really understand it myself! Most memorable thing, truely I cannot answer that. I can honestly say I loved it all, every second of every day. Flying in a helicopter over NZ's Southern Alps mountains with Bernard and Miranda to relocate at the end of one day from Queenstown to Twizel, partying with Elijah, Billy, Dom et al after Elijah has just shot his last scene with Peter during pick ups for ROTK, riding amongst 200 riders and horses for various scenes etc etc etc... It was all wonderful Caitlin. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nini wrote: Hi Bruce! Thank you for taking the time to answer some of our questions. I was watching 'Beyond Justice' the other day and I really enjoyed you as Andy Deakin – good movie, good actors. Do you enjoy filming TV movies / TV series or would you rather do more big budget movies like 'The Lord of the Rings'? Looking forward to meeting you, Aroha, Nini Bruce: Nice with the Aroha at the end there Nini. To those of you who are not familiar with the term, it is from the Maori language and encapsulates all things LOVE. You can say arohanui which means big love!!!. That's way cool that you have seen some of the 'Lawless' series. We did 3 of those tele-movies. It was cool for me as I always loved working with and just spending time with Kevin Smith, he was probably NZ's most talented human being, and I'm not trying to be nice here. The guy was a seriuosly astounding talent, he tended to get put up for roles that exploited his body(and no doubt you would agree, what a bloody body !!!). Ange Dotchin is also such a great person to work with and be around, so I loved working on those gigs, not sure if the finished product was that great but the journey was cool. I would really enjoy working on some more big budget stuff, but also am really enjoying the prospect of smaller more intimate stories. In the end it comes down to the people you are working with. My favorite gigs outside of LOTR have all been really small budget jobs with wonderful people. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ¥~MJ~¥ wrote: Hi Bruce! Glad you could come and say hi, facing the insanity of us :) 1) What was the craziest thing you did in high school (that you would willing share with us?) 2) Knowing you have gone on fishing trips before, what kind do you like to fish for the most? 3) What's the worst/best summer job that you ever had? Cheers! MJ xx Bruce: Hey MJ, Craziest thing in high school, I was a goodey good. I was captain of the 1st. 15, which is the schools top rugby team and I was the head prefect, which is sort of like school captain, so I really did not get up to too much nonsense,....however alot of my good mates including the guy I do my comedy duo with, were all the trouble makers. They used to throw eggs up in the air above a crowded area, so someone would often cop a broken egg as it came hurtling down out of no where! I don't really fish for fun. My fishing was for work as that is how my dad made his living. We would go out to sea for 3-7 days at a time. My favorite fish is the dolphin (not to eat of course!!!) After always wanting to I jumped off the boat one day to swim with some dolphins way up off the northern coast of NZ. I was by myself and pretty nervous but had always wanted to do that. It was unreal. 3 dolpins. They would not let me touch them but they swam all round me under me etc etc, making their little squeeky sounds. Worst summer job was digging foundations for houses, in clay that was rock solid. We got paid .25 cents per foot (about 300-400cm) that we dug. The ground was so hard our brains vibrated each time we struck the earth with the spade, and we could only dig about 1 foot an hour!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ shadowfax wrote: Hi Bruce, Just wanted to know if you'll be in charge of sounds again like last year at the radio play. You had us all rolling on the floor with it. Also what kind of projects have you been involved lately? Thank you for being here tonight. Kathleen Bruce: Kathleen, if you think I am going to be in charge of sounds again you have to be either stone deaf or just crazy! That was ridiculous. I want to be an actor in the radio play. I normally think that I can do quite good sounds with my mouth etc, but that day all semblance of talent left me to fend for myself. I'm gald YOU had fun!!!! My projects at present are promoting the DVD my film company IndiPact Films has just released of an 80 minute digital feature "1nite" and getting the next feature "P120" we are going to make ready. I am currently doing the voice narration for a TV series that is about property. I have also done some loop group and and ADR work for a new NZ TV series called Madigans ....something !!!! don't remember the name! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ viggoswench wrote: Hi bruce!!! (waves madley) Firstly, can I just say a big hello to you and thanks for this chat. I have been reading everything on your site and I would like to ask a couple of questions. 1.What book/film would you love to see as a musical? 2.Who are your comedy heros and do you consider Monty Python as one of them? Can't wait to see you at the festival. So good luck and have a good one!! Lucie xxxxx Bruce: Hi Lucie, Bloody hell as a musical. There have been some local disasterous attempts at making books into musicals, so it is dangerous territory. Maybe one of Deepak Chopras books about auyavedic healing, or 'Rich dad Poor dad'. To tell the truth I'm not a big fan of musicals, so the idea of books I have read being made into musicals sends a chill up my spine. Having said that I recently MC'd a fund rasing event to help send a young kiwi woman, Rochelle Bright, to Tische, which is the school for musical theatre at NY University. She is the first NZ'er to ever be accepted there and she won the Deans Fellowship. I will gladly do her musicals, she is brilliant. Comedic hero, without question Spike Milligan. Monty Python are definitely up there, as is George Carlin from the states, Bill Hicks from US, Bill Bailey from UK. But there is only one Spike to rule them all!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LadyGarnett wrote: Hi Bruce! Looking forward to seeing you at the Fellowship Festival after having met you at Dragon*con (Gandalf for President button) and ORC. Question: How do you feel about Lord of the Rings fan fiction? Have you read any about Gamling? I have a message from someone who was unable to be here today…. ZEE SAYS HI!! *big hug* Question from Zee: Will you bring copies of the "1Nite" DVD to Dragon*con so she can buy one? Hugs, Kathy Bruce: Hey Kathy, No I have not read any Fan fiction. Are there juicy bits involving Gamling??? He really is a bit of a stud you know, but any rumours about the true nature of his relationship with the horses of the Rihhirrim are just that...RUMOURS! What they meant to say is he is a horse!!! Sorry, sorry I have to apologise for that last outburst! For sure I can take some copies of "1nite" to Dragon. The best place to find out about it is our website http://www.indipact.com. I will get the buying side of it sorted out ASAP. I can bring a trailer of the film to play at Louise's gig, during my presentations. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ m4sure wrote: Hiya Bruce & welcome! 1st question: What was your most difficult scene in TTT/ROTK & did you ever get the giggles in a scene you weren't meant too? 2nd question: Who do you think had the best beard & wig out of Gamling...Aragorn...Eomer & Gandalf & if you had a chance to play any of the other characters in LOTR which one would that be & why? Thanx for visiting us all here & I can't wait to see you again soon! Bruce: Hi de Hi, My most difficult scene was my very first scene, because it was my first scene. I walked into a shoot that had already been going for 9 months and was being heralded around the world as the next "big" movie event. So to have a few days notice and then suddenly be standing next to Bernard Hill and acting with him was totally daunting, but absolutely exhilerating. Best beard, Karl as Eomer. He had enough warning to grow his own, and it is not a grossly thick coil of fur. Best wig, Gandalf. I had the pleasure of being in make up room with Ian one day, his wig was stunning up close. Orlando's wig was the biggest surprise. The first time I saw him he had his wig on, then at the end of the day I saw him after wrap for the day and he was sporting a black mowhawk!!! I'm looking forward to catching up with you also ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Donna wrote: Hi Bruce! I'm really excited about seeing you at the event later this month. However, I do have a question in regards to the '1nite' DVD release.. I believe it is due to come out anytime but nothing happens when I click on the disc icon. Assuming it isn't available yet so could you tell me when it is likely to be and before I do order, will you by any chance bring any copies with you to the Festival? Donna x Bruce: Donna was the name of the first woman I ever loved!!! We were 7 years old, but she loved my best mate Murray... its a hard life! at times. Our website is still being built basically, so that is why the trailer does not play etc. It is having to be converted to Quicktime before we can get it up there. I will bring some copies. At this point we are now looking at having another online retail site handle it for us, so will put those details up as soon as they are sorted out. Thanks for the interest. See u there ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ silmarien2 wrote: Hey Bruce How are you? What kind of movies do you like? My son, who's 5 years old, wanted to know what the funniest thing is that ever happend to you. Take care and many hugs from the netherlands. Bruce: The Netherlands, you guys rock. I loved my trip to Utrecht in 2003 and am hoping to be there this year also. I think the fact that I grew up in a family where our lives revolved around being out on the water, made me have an instant attraction to Holland and all those dykes, crazy stuff, big canals, little canals all over the place. Love it. The cafes in Amsterdam are not bad either !!!! I actually like movies that are about human stories. I get really sucked into the emotions of films that take you into peoples minds. I quite often watch films that have subtitles as a lot of european films are cool for me. A director whose films I totally reccommend is Emir Kustarika (I know I have definitely spelled his name wrong). He did movies like 'Black Cat White Cat', 'Underground', 'Time of The Gypsies'. They are surreal but brilliant and full of out of it comedy and tragedy. The funniest thing that ever happened? Phew.... another of those big ones. I have ripped my pants right up the back seam when dancing on stage in 'West Side Story', which was my first ever 'play' after I stopped being a full time dancer. I fell off the stage into the orchestra pit during a performance of 'Oedipus', then had to lie there on the floor of the pit, laughing and laughing as I could hear the musician laughing and laughing. Another bloody musical story... I started to wet myself on stage during a season 'The Sound Of Music'. I was one of 4 Nazis onstage as ol' Von trapp was singing 'Eidelwiess'. Something totaly crazy had just happened and we had to stand at attention, facing the audience for what seemed like half an hour. All the Nazis started to laugh, but we had to stifle our laughter so the audience could not see or hear us. We could hear each other snorting and choking to stop the laughs coming out, which then made it even worse.that's when I started to pee myself. Not much but enough to make it very uncomfortable.!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Talasi wrote: Hello Bruce, It's wonderful to have you here. TFF sounds amazing, and I'm sorry I can't make it. I am actually passing some questions along for a friend who was unable to make it due to work. She was heartbroken. These are from the illustrious ZeeDrippyVessel :) 1. We need the CORRECT overseas phone number for the radio show - I have much zaniness and wisdom to impart, however my phone carrier says the phone number I"m trying is like.... WRONG! 2. What is the possibility of him bringing copies of the '1nite' DVD to Dragoncon. I'll buy and I MIGHT even be talked into bringing my dvd player and holding 'showings' (I charge cheesecake) in my hotel room - if I get one. Bring your own booze. Hugs and sloppy kisses, Talasi Bruce: Hello, Sloppy kisses are the best. I think you would have to dial 0064-9- before the number. I will check with the station and post it on my web site http://www.bruce-hopkins.com. You cannot dial the 0800 free number from overseas. It would be cool to have you ring up. I will bring copies of '1nite', I guess that will have to be NTSC, which we are getting some copies done in. There are 2 systems around the world PAL and NTSC. I will bring both. Look forward to catching you there, may even poke my head in at the showing!!! (I can tell yopu how it ends!!! ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inwë wrote: Hi Bruce, How are you? Hope you are well. Of all the things you’ve done in your professional life, what have you enjoyed the most? Looking forward to seeing you again at tFF! Kristin xx Bruce: Hi there Kristin,I once stood with my arm around Kiri Te Kanawa,(NZ's world reknowned opera soprano) singing a song to mark the end of her 50th. birthday party at her home, where about 50 people from around the world had come to be with her. That was a buzz. I had just done a small pantomime that a friend of hers had written about her life, and then got to go and be with her. 'LOTR' definitley is the most remarkable journey I have had in my professional life, although I truely love all performing. One of my favorite all time shows was doing a Steve Berkoff play called 'East'. It was cool to talk to Andy one day and find out that Andy Serkis and his wife are huge fans of Berkoff's also and have done some of his work. If you have not seen his stuff, do it. he is one of the worlds stage geniuses. I just saw him do a one man show here in Auckland at the Auckland festival this year. He played a scene from 'Macbeth', being both Lady Macca and Macca himself, the guy is mind blowingly brilliant. Which makes me realise my all time favorite role was playing 'Macbeth' in late 2003. Stunning show and I loved doing it. We did the best sword fight of all time ever in the history the universe!!! even if I do say so myself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ KookabuRRa wrote: Hello Bruce! Greetings from Finalnd. How are you? It's wonderful that you wanted to come chat with us! In the last Fellowship Festival my sister and I asked if you've seen Finding Nemo with the big nice shark Bruce. You hadn't at the time. Have you seen it now? How do like shark Brucie? Enjoy the chat! Aura and Otava Bruce: Sharks, I like them best when they are with deep fried chips!!! Actually every time I go surfing (which is not alot at the moment as it is winter here and men's private parts don't like the cold water!) I always acknowledge that I am in the fish's world, include the fishs with the big teeth!!! I grew up going commercial fishing with my father as he is a commercial fisherman (makes sense doesn't it) and I have seen some pretty big stuff at sea including sharks. Yes I have seen Nemo by the way. He was a cute sharkey warky. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ askfifimac wrote: Hello Bruce and greetings from waaay across the pond in New York. My other half Devon is at work but has insisted that I ask you a few questions (we had the pleasure of sitting with you at table #1 at the feast last year on Sunday evening...) he would like to know if a) you have any plans to be at Ring*Con, he is looking forward to both events but has said that he would like to see you at both. b) how did you get involved with Operation Read living all the way in NZ? And do you plan on doing more appearances with that outreach? Thanks blessings and huggles to you! Felicia Bruce: How come you guys all want photos with those bloody elves still. I tell you they will walk out on you, whereas a nice Rohan bloke, now there's loyalty!!! I remember you, that was a crazy night, thanks to having that crazy tall elf Mr. Mark F. at the table also. No I am not going to Ring*Con, they have not invited me for the last 2 years, not sure why, I heard last year they said I cost too much!!! However I did not even hear from them so I don't know who is playing games there, but that's ok. I'm going to Dragon Con after coming to Louise's wonderful show, and Dragon is always fun, totally bizarrre. I got invloved in Operation Read after asking the NZ consul general in LA if he kenw of any schools in LA who may like and actor from 'LOTR' to visit (I was getting myself there to go to some functions around the academy awards for ROTK) I had visited a school here in NZ as part of a news programme after the world premier and it was such a cool experience the kids were brill. So I got put in touch with Operation Read through that contact and it snowballed from there. Unfortunatley there doco side of it seems to have stalled from the LA side. No funding body here in NZ seems to be wanting to take it on as it is a story based in LA not NZ (I will make some more efforts to try and get funding over there, but we will see how it goes) Thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TricksyHobbit wrote: Hi Bruce and on behalf of all our members, Welcome to the Fellowship Festival Forums! Thank you for giving us your time to answer a few questions. We're all looking forward to seeing you again in a few weeks! My question is: How has being in 'The Lord of the Rings' affected your career? Are you doing things now that you never dreamt you would do just because you were in the films? Looking forward to meeting you soon! Rosie x Bruce: Hey Trixie Rosie, how are you? 'LOTR' has affected my career in that I got to see how big the industry I'm involved in, is. Being here in NZ you are very isolated and even though we get all the goss from magazines and TV shows etc. you truely do not understand how vast the worlds of movie making and the audiences are till you get away and see it. So coming to conventions etc. has certainly influenced what I am doing now. I have not actuall had a paid TV or film job since the beginning of 2004. I have done a couple of fantastic theatre shows one with Jennifer Ward-Lealand and one with Michael Hurst (Iaolus in Hercules). They are in fact hubby and wifey and so it was cool to do a show with each of them. I also had to sing on stage in both shows so that was wild. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dunthonwen wrote: Hi Bruce!! Have good days! ~<3~ Dunthonwen ~*~ Bruce: Gidday Lady D, The song would have to be a Led Zepplin, probaly 'Black Dog' or some other absolutley kick arse full on screamer. How did Robert Plant do that stuff!!! My favorite colour???? aye yai yai,... toss up between deep green and purple, mind you rich magentas are nice too, then there's the gold of an evening sunset or the threatening darkness of strom clouds.. Number .....7 came to mind just then so I shall say 7, lucky seven. Greetings from Germany Glaewen :) Bruce: That's right Auckland is a tropical paradise to where you guys come from in winter. Still chilly though, 5 dregees(C) today. My love goes to you also for your father, and I wish him well. No I don't own a horse, my family found it funny to think of me riding as they thought i would fall off alot. Horses have always just run away with me hangiong on for my life, when I ride them, so riding in 'LOTR' was a blast.
