The Poor Knights competition is offered every year, at the end of programme delivery, for a free trip (sponsored by Dive Tutukaka) for one student from each of the new participating Northland schools in the full Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) programme. This year students and their guardians were joined on the sole charter by film star - Bruce Hopkins on the 5th annual "Dive! Tutukaka - Experiencing Marine Reserves" competition trip. Bruce Hopkins is one of New Zealand's most prolific actors featuring in films such as 'The Lord of the Rings', 'Jubilee' and 'Savage Honeymoon'. Kelly Tarlton's daughter and grandson also came on the trip with Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) coordinators Samara Sutherland and Kim Boyle. The competition offers the students a great incentive to produce work and action marine conservation within their community. It also gives the students and their guardians an opportunity to experience another fantastic marine reserve. Students are selected based on the enthusiasm and effort they show when studying the EMR programme and New Zealand marine conservation.
